If you're going dairy-free and overwhelmed by the non-dairy milk options, this guide is for you. I'm covering everything you need to know about common substitutes, the best options for different recipes, and popular brands to try.

I remember when I first went dairy-free over 10 years ago! I developed lactose intolerance, and that, paired with other food allergies, made me quit dairy cold turkey. I remember how hard it was to cook my favorite meals at home, and grocery shopping felt like a major challenge.

Over the years, I've learned the best ways to replace milk in recipes and which dairy-free milk works best depending on what I'm making. Think of me as your personal cheerleader, cheering you on, we got this!

Best Milk Alternatives

The good news is that there are several non-dairy milk alternatives in most grocery stores these days. So I suggest, once you finish reading this, head to your nearest store and grab a couple to try.

Almond Milk

Almond milk is super popular and has a light, nutty flavor that works in a lot of dishes. It's perfect for smoothies, baking, dairy free pancakes, cereal, and even as a coffee creamer. Keep in mind though, it's thinner than some of vegan milk, so it's not the best choice if you're looking for something really creamy.

Soy Milk

Soy milk is a versatile option with a nice, creamy texture. It has a mild flavor, making it a great all-around choice. Soy milk is a great staple for cooking savory dishes to baking desserts. You can also whisk it together with apple cider vinegar to make a homemade dairy-free buttermilk substitute.

Coconut Milk

Coconut milk comes in two types: The thicker, canned kind (usually for cooking) and the drinkable, carton version. It's rich, creamy, and sometimes has a strong flavor. I love it in my dairy-free whipped cream, vegan pumpkin pie, and marry me chickpeas.

Oat Milk

Oat milk is another hugely popular option due to its creamy texture and naturally sweet taste. It's great for baking vegan desserts, plus froths incredibly well, making it perfect for lattes, like my dairy free PSL. Oat milk is also really easy to make at home! Just blend together rolled oats, water, sweetener, and a pinch of salt. It's really that easy.

Flax Milk

Flax milk has a smooth consistency and mild, neutral flavor that won't overpower your recipes. It's a great go-to for just about anything you're making. Try it in my vegan waffles, dairy free and egg free dinner rolls, or vegan banana bread.

Other Dairy Free Milk

There are several other types of dairy-free milk, such as macadamia nut milk, cashew milk, banana milk, hazelnut milk, and rice milk, each with its own unique flavor and uses in recipes.

Plant Based Milk Brands

This is by no means a complete list, but rather a collection of dairy-free milk brands I personally trust and use. I typically shop at Kroger, Sprouts, or Thrive Market (get 30% off plus a free $60 gift when you join)!

  • Silk: One of the most well-known brands in the world, Silk offers a wide range of options and best of all, they're widely available.
  • Oatly: The go-to for creamy oat milk! Oatly is naturally sweet, froths well, and is all about sustainability.
  • Willa's: Another oat milk winner! Willa is a newer oat milk brand but rivals Oatly for smooth consistency and great taste.
  • Milkadamia: If you're a coffee drinker, try the Milkadamia barista blends. You'll be amazed how well they steam and foam.
  • So Delicious: One of my favorite dairy-free brands! So Delicious offers a variety of non-dairy milk plus yogurts and frozen treats.
  • Ripple: Known for its creamy texture and slightly nutty flavor, this pea-based milk is a great choice for those seeking a rich and satisfying milk substitute.

Whether you're lactose intolerant, have a milk allergy, follow a vegan lifestyle, or just want to cut out dairy, there are plenty of milk alternatives to explore. I hope this guide was helpful! Please leave me a comment sharing your favorite dairy-free milk and way to use them.
