One of the first recipes I posted on this blog was for homemade taco seasoning. Since then, I've been documenting how to make grocery store staples for a fraction of the cost at home. Other popular substitutes are my vegan buttermilk, oat milk, eggless mayo, and vegan parmesan.

What is poultry seasoning?

Poultry seasoning is a spice blend with a bold, savory, sage-forward flavor. It's made up of common spices and typically used in holiday stuffing, broth, meat, veggies, and soup. You can find it on the spice aisle at the store or buy it online, but it's so quick and easy to make at home!

How to make poultry seasoning

This classic poultry seasoning substitute comes together with a handful of simple ingredients you likely already have in your spice cabinet.

  • Ground sage: A classic, savory herb that adds depth to poultry dishes.
  • Dried thyme: Adds a slightly lemony and earthy flavor profile.
  • Dried rosemary: A strong, piney herb that pairs well with poultry.
  • Dried marjoram: Adds an aromatic and herbal note.
  • Ground nutmeg: Brings a subtle, warm, and earthy flavor.
  • Ground black pepper: Enhances the overall seasoning.

Simply whisk all of the ingredients together and store in an airtight container in a cool place for up to 6 months. After that, it will begin to lose its flavor. These are the glass jars that I store my homemade seasonings in.

Poultry seasoning uses

You can use it on chicken or turkey, but since it's "accidentally" vegan, it's also great for seasoning roasted vegetables or soup. My favorite ways to use this DIY poultry seasoning include:

  • As a dry rub for smoked chicken or smoked turkey
  • Replacing Italian seasoning in baked chicken meatballs
  • Mixed into sausage stuffing casserole
  • Added to meatless stuffing casserole
  • Sprinkled into Thanksgiving stuffing muffins

Most recipes call for 1-2 teaspoons of poultry seasoning for 1 pound of meat or vegetables. Feel free to adjust the quantities to suit your taste preferences. You can also double or triple this recipe to make a larger batch.

If you try making your own poultry seasoning blend, please leave me a comment and let me know what you think!
