A tamale charcuterie board is a fun and delicious way to serve a large amount of tamales during the holidays, for special occasions, or to switch up family dinner.

Charcuterie boards may have originated in France, but they've taken on a world of their own! To make your own Mexican tamale platter, simply arrange store-bought or homemade tamales on a large board along with your favorite sides.

Tamales are a traditional Mexican dish made with corn dough (masa) and a filling. They're typically stuffed with seasoned meat or vegetables, wrapped in corn husks or banana leaves, then steamed to perfection.

Why you'll love this Mexican charcuterie board

  • Totally customizable: If you're making tamales from scratch here are a few ideas to get you started: Beef, pork, chicken, tofu, potatoes, black beans!
  • Endless variations: Switch up the side dishes, salsas, and dips that accompany the tamales.
  • Great any time of year: While my family typically enjoy tamales around Christmas time, they're also great for new years eve, taco tuesday tamale-making party, or birthday parties.

How to make a tamale charcuterie board

  • If making homemade tamales, start by prepping, assembling, then steaming. For store-bought tamales, follow package directions. This will likely take around 1 hour.
  • As the tamales steam, prepare sauces and other condiments. Some of my favorites to include are red enchilada sauce, tomatillo salsa verde, pico de gallo, mango habanero salsa, corn salsa, smoked salsa, and tofu queso.
  • Build your board! Place large items first like the cooked tamales or any bowls, then fill in the empty spaces with garnishes like fresh cilantro or lime wedges.

More side dishes for tamales

If you run out of room on your board, turn it into a tamale bar with tortilla chips and guacamole, tiny tacos, air fryer flautas, fajita vegetables, rice, beans, and more. Don't forget drinks - I suggest my watermelon agua fresca, limeade margarita, ranch water, or paloma.

  • Once the tamales are cooked, it's time to assemble the tamale platter. Place large items first like the tamales, followed by bowls of salsa or sauce, then any additional toppings like fresh cilantro or lime wedges.

Notes

Prep time, cook time, and serving size will all depend on the type of tamales you use and what you add to your charcuterie board. I've added approximations based on making this a handful of times.
