This Texas Margarita recipe comes together with tequila, lime juice, orange juice, triple sec, and agave nectar. It's a refreshing drink, great for hot summer nights or your next party!

Here in Texas, we love margaritas! You'll find them classic with a bright-crisp taste, frozen, and infused with a variety of different flavors.

What is a Texas margarita

A Texas margarita is a fun twist on the traditional margarita recipe! It's a great cocktail to serve during happy hour, with dinner, or at parties.

Texas margaritas don't have an origin story, but we do know they include a splash of orange juice to balance out the tart lime juice and tequila. The touch of sweetness makes this citrusy cocktail the perfect margarita for summer.

Why you'll love this recipe

  • Balanced flavors: The citrus flavors blend so well together to make this margarita perfectly sippable.
  • Fresh flavor: This recipe uses simple ingredients, including fresh juice. No sweet and sour mix here.
  • Can be made in batches: Make a single serving or multiply the measurements to serve a crowd.

Equipment

You'll need a jigger and cocktail shaker to make a homemade margarita. I serve mine with crushed ice using my nugget ice maker, but standard ice cubes work just as great.

Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to make this margarita with orange juice and lime juice, plus my recommended substitutions.

  • Tequila: The best tequila for a smooth margarita is blanco tequila, also known as silver tequila. For a more complex flavor, use a gold tequila like reposado or añejo.
  • Fresh lime juice: Using fresh lime juice reduces the bitterness that often comes with using bottled lime juice.
  • Fresh orange juice: I suggest using fresh OJ for the best flavor, however carton fruit juice without added sweetener works just as well.
  • Orange liqueur: This sweetened liqueur is made from dried orange rinds or oil. Use Triple Sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier.
  • Agave nectar: For extra sweetness, add a drop of agave nectar! It's made from the agave plant, which is the same plant used to make tequila. Simple syrup can be used as an alternative. Add more or less, depending on your preference.

How to make a Texas margarita

The full directions for this Texas margarita recipe are in the printable recipe card below.

  1. Rim the glasses: Salt-rimmed glasses enhance the flavor of the margarita ingredients. To add a little heat, try a tajin salted rim! Simply run a lime wedge along the rim of a margarita glass, then the glass upside down, and dip into the margarita salt. If serving a crowd, repeat with remaining cocktail glasses.
  2. Mix the margarita: Add the tequila, fresh lime juice, freshly squeezed orange juice, triple sec, and agave nectar to a cocktail shaker and fill the shaker with ice. Shake until well chilled, about 15 seconds.
  3. Pour into glasses: Fill the cocktail glasses with ice then strain the shaken margarita over the ice. Garnish with a lime wheel and orange wedge. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Variations

  • Big batch: For pitcher margaritas, double or triple the measurements according to how many servings you want to make. You can shake with ice or just stir everything together in a pitcher and serve with ice.
  • Frozen: To make frozen Texas margaritas, add the margarita ingredients to a blender along with a cup of ice. Blend until smooth then serve.

What to serve with a Texas margarita

  • Pair this refreshing margarita with other classic Texas dishes like Cowboy Caviar or Texas Trash.
  • Enjoy with the Tex Mex favorite, chimichangas! Or keep it classic with tacos.
