Ingredient notes
- Zero proof whiskey: Ritual Whiskey Alternative is my go-to for this recipe. It provides the same smoky and warm flavors as traditional whiskey, without the alcohol! As a substitute, use ginger ale, ginger beer, lemonade, or even limeade.
- Mint: Fresh mint leaves are crucial for make a non alcoholic julep. Grab a fresh mint plant or pre packaged mint leaves in the produce department of your grocery store.
- Simple syrup: Using simple syrup as a sweetener ensures a smooth drink with no sugar granules. The simple syrup ratio is 1:1, equal parts water to granulated sugar. Simply heat water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add sugar and stir to combine. Once dissolved, remove from heat and let cool before using.
Tips for making a mint julep mocktail
- A classic mint julep is served in a silver cup or pewter cup, though you can use a rocks glass or similar.
- Crushed ice is a must for mint juleps! It cools down the drink quickly and keeps the glass frosty.
- Balance out the flavors by adding a splash of water, lemon juice, or lime juice for an equally delicious drink.
- When muddling the mint, just press it until it becomes aromatic. You aren't trying to crush it, just slightly bruise it to help release its fragrant oils.
