Ingredient notes
- Zero proof rum for mojitos: A traditional mojito calls for white rum, to keep the cocktail light. To make a more complex tasting mojito, I’d suggest experimenting with spiced rum. This Ritual Rum Alternative has a lush, rich flavor with notes of sweet vanilla and toasted spices.
- Mint: Fresh mint leaves are an absolute must for mojitos! You can find fresh mint plants or leaves packaged in the produce department of your grocery store. Save any extra for garnish and for making non-alcoholic mint juleps!
- Lime juice: Fresh lime juice is best! Since every ingredient really counts in a cocktail I don’t recommend store-bought lime juice or concentrate. No limes? Use fresh lemon juice as a substitute.
- Simple syrup: Using simple syrup ensures a smooth drink with no sugar granules floating around. The simple syrup ratio is 1:1, equal parts water to granulated sugar. Simply heat water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add sugar and stir to combine. Once dissolved, remove from heat and let cool.
- Sparkling water: Use soda water, club soda, or seltzer. These add more volume and make the drink perfectly fizzy.
How to make a mojito mocktail
The full directions for this zero proof mojito are in the printable recipe card below.
- Muddle the mint: In a collins glass or highball glass, add the mint leaves, non alcoholic rum, lime juice, and simple syrup. Gently muddle together.
- Fill glass with ice: Fill the glass with ice cubes or crushed ice.
- Top with sparkling water: Pour sparkling water over ice and stir the non alcoholic mojito together.
- Garnish: Don’t forget to garnish your mojito mocktail with fresh mint leaves and lime slices!
Tips from Jenna
- Don’t over-muddle! Just press the mint down in the bottom of the glass to release the oils. Pulverizing the mint will create a bitter taste in your mojito mocktail. We're looking for fresh, invigorating, and mint flavor.
- Adjust to your liking. If the drink needs sweetness, add more simple syrup or even agave syrup. If it needs more tartness, add a splash of lime juice.
- If you don’t have a cocktail muddler, use the bottom of a wooden spoon to muddle.
