We're having a baby!! I'm so excited to share my first trimester experience, answer some questions, chat about how I've been feeling, plus share some of my favorite resources.

Hello hello, I'm nearing the end of the first trimester and so happy to introduce you to Baby Urben!

I haven't shared as many life updates lately and would love to get back to that. Last year was quite a rollercoaster, but I'm happy to say we're all happy and healthy!

Pregnancy Q&A

When are you due? I'm due at the end of summer.

How did you tell your husband? I immediately showed Zack the positive pregnancy test. There's no way I could have kept something this big a secret for long. I also gifted him this fun board book during the holidays!

What have your pregnancy symptoms been? In the first 6 weeks, I was mostly just swollen, tired, snacky, experiencing minor vertigo, and freezing cold. My hormonal acne also flared and hasn't really gone away. During the 7th week, I started to have slight food aversions. A couple days in the 8th week I had nausea at night but never actually got sick. The last few weeks symptoms have been pretty mild, just more tiredness, a bit hungrier than usual, tender, etc.

When did you tell your family? We told both of our parents and my sister very early, around 5 weeks, as we traveled to see them for Thanksgiving! We told additional family members around Christmas.

When was your first ultrasound? My first ultrasound was at 9 weeks. I was actually measuring 9 weeks and 2 days, so we were able to see the little gummy bear and hear its heartbeat.

Do you think it's a boy or a girl? We're just happy and hopeful for a healthy baby! I've looked up all the old wives' tales and at this point, it's basically split down the middle. Acne – girl, morning sickness isn't bad – boy, baby's heartbeat above 140 – girl, cold feet – boy. I'm getting the optional NIPT and the results will include the gender, so we should know any day now.

What are your favorite pregnancy apps? I currently have a few apps but I enjoy them each for different reasons: I've used Flo for years and like the calendar view. Expectful is fantastic for meditation. Both the What to Expect and BabyCenter apps have new weekly information as the baby grows, so I enjoy scrolling through those to learn about highlights, see baby size comparison, etc.

Any books you recommend? Zack and I have been listening to the audiobook of Cribsheet by Emily Oster. We are both really enjoying it! I bought but haven't started reading Bumpin by Leslie Schrock. I've also heard great things about Expecting Better, so I'll be sure to include an update if it gets added to my reading list. Feel free to share your favorite pregnancy or parenting books (or other resources) in the comments!

First trimester food ideas

For the most part, I've been eating the same as normal. Lots of roasted vegetables, salads, tacos, etc. (I'm dairy free and egg free due to food allergies and intolerances!) I never ate much meat or seafood, but I haven't had any since around week 6.

Below are some of my favorite meals and snacks that are filling but easy on the stomach:

  • Sliced apples
  • Toasted bagel
  • Crackers
  • Peanut butter toast with sliced banana and chia seeds
  • Smashed avocado on rice cakes
  • Stuffed dates with peanut butter
  • Warm lemon water
  • Peanut bars
  • Dairy free quesadillas
  • Oatmeal
  • Popcorn
  • Peppermint tea
  • Granola with vegan yogurt
  • Hidden veggie mac and cheese
  • Coconut milk pumpkin soup
  • Dairy free and egg free banana bread

My first trimester must haves

Of course, you're going to need prenatal vitamins and anything else your doctor has recommended. But here are a handful of random things that came in handy:

  • Water bottle or large tumbler
  • Anti-nausea wristbands
  • Crop tank tops for sleeping
  • Cozy blanket and fuzzy socks
  • Pregnancy pillow

First Trimester Recap

If there's anything I've learned in these first few months, it's that every pregnancy is different!

I'm incredibly surprised and grateful to have experienced pretty mild symptoms so far. Here's hoping that sticks around!

I can't wait to share future bumpdates, nursery ideas, babymoon plans, and of course, what I'm eating/new recipes during this sweet season of life.

Whew, I’m so excited for what’s to come! I won’t be turning full mommy blogger, but I would love to document our first pregnancy, along with updates and resources. Let me know what you’re interested seeing and learning more about!

If you’re also pregnant, congratulations! If you're still trying or healing from loss, I'm sending so much love your way. And if you’re not in this season of life but continue to support me, thank you.
