These easy homemade calzones are simple, delicious, and freezer-friendly! Load em up with your favorite pizza toppings like diced mushrooms, bell peppers, olives, dairy-free cheese, and sauce.

Calzones are SO underrated, y'all! These handheld pizzas are perfect for a fun simple lunch or make ahead meal for dinner.

With back to school chaos and the upcoming fall season, these homemade pizza pockets are your answer for quick and easy meals. Simply roll the dough out, fill with your favorite pizza toppings, fold in half and crimp the seams, then bake for 15 minutes!

Homemade Calzone Recipe FAQ

Alright, what is a calzone? A calzone is basically a pizza pocket! Filled with all your favorite pizza toppings. It traditionally does not include sauce inside because you're supposed to dunk each bite into sauce... But I like to live life on the edge, so I spread a little homemade pizza sauce on the inside AND dunk!

Can I make these dairy-free? As is, these homemade calzones are dairy-free! Make sure to check your non-dairy cheese and marinara or pizza sauce.

What about vegan or vegetarian? Heck yeah! Just don't add any meat.

Help, what should I stuff my calzone with? I'm a fan of cooked down red onion and mushroom with vegan ricotta cheese!

Is calzone dough and pizza dough the same? Yup! This dough recipe can also be used to make two 12-inch pizzas.

What should I serve with calzones? I enjoy pairing them with veggies or a side salad.

Calzone Meal Prep and Storage

How do I store leftovers? Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Can I freeze them? You sure can. Just let them cool completely then wrap in plastic wrap, place in a large freezer bag, and freeze for up to 3 months.

What about reheating? To reheat, thaw the calzone in the fridge for a few hours, remove plastic wrap and warm in the microwave for about 2-3 minutes. If cooking from frozen, microwave cooking time will need to be increased!

Instructions

  • In the bowl of your stand mixer, dissolve yeast in warm water and let sit for 10 minutes. Add flour, sugar, and salt. Attach the dough hook and start kneading, while pouring the olive oil in. Knead until the dough forms into a solid ball.
  • Grease the inside of the bowl, place the dough inside, and cover for about an hour. Once the dough has doubled in size, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and divide into 8 equal pieces.
  • Using a rolling pin, roll each piece out into circles. On half of each dough circle, add your favorite pizza toppings, making sure to leave room around the edges. Fold the other half of each circle and crimp the edges. Cut a couple air vents on the top of each unbaked calzone and transfer to prepared baking sheet.
  • Brush each unbaked calzone with a little olive oil and bake at 475F for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool slightly, then serve with additional pizza sauce on the side!
