This homemade vegan chocolate bars recipe is easy to make with dairy free chocolate chips and coconut oil. They're perfectly rich with a creamy texture and endless variations! Great for any chocolate lover.
Typically making your own chocolate involves a double boiler with ingredients like cocoa butter and cocoa powder. These chocolate bars are made with chocolate chips and coconut oil in a silicone chocolate bar mold.
Once the chocolate is set, enjoy as is or with homemade vegan marshmallows for delicious vegan s'mores!
Why you'll love this recipe
- Homemade chocolate bars make the ultimate holiday gift. Try my vegan white chocolate bars too!
- This recipe is naturally dairy free and gluten free!
- It takes less than 10 minutes to prepare.
Ingredient notes
These vegan chocolate bars come together with 2 simple ingredients. Here's what you'll need:
- Vegan chocolate chips: There are a handful of dairy-free chocolate chips out there, these days. From dark chocolate to milk chocolate, semi sweet chocolate and more! My go-to brands are Enjoy Life, Guittard, Nestle, Simple Truth, and Trader Joe's.
- Coconut oil: This is an optional ingredient but I recommend it. Coconut oil is the secret to shiny chocolate coating. It also helps the chocolate soften while melting, makes it super-smooth so it's easy to pour, and helps it harden as it chills.
Tip from Jenna: I don't mind a slight coconut taste, but if you do, be sure to use refined coconut oil. Refined coconut oil has a neutral taste and smell. Unrefined coconut oil has a stronger coconut taste and smell, but both are great for baking and cooking.
How to make vegan chocolate
The full instructions for my homemade vegan chocolate recipe are found down below in the recipe card.
Step 1: Melt the chocolate chips and coconut oil
Start by melting the vegan chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl in 30 second increments. This should take about 1 minute. Stir until completely smooth. Alternatively, melt the chocolate and coconut oil in a small saucepan on the stove over low heat.
Step 2: Fill the silicone chocolate mold
Once the chocolate is melted, pour directly into the silicone mold and level it off. These are the silicone chocolate molds I use, but I also have this chocolate bar set for a thicker candy bar and this chocolate lollipop mold for festive Christmas candy.
Step 3: Let the chocolate set in fridge
Let sit on the counter for 15 minutes, then transfer to the refrigerator and let set overnight. If you're in a rush, let chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours or pop it in the freezer. Make sure chocolate is fully set before breaking into pieces!
Variations
My vegan chocolate bars are sturdy enough to snap but velvety smooth once you take a bite. Keep them classic or switch them up with these optional add-ins:
- Sweeteners: Try maple syrup, agave syrup, or date syrup.
- Extracts: Vanilla extract is common but experiment with peppermint, orange, almond, and more!
- Nuts and seeds: My favorites are almonds, macadamia nuts, or pumpkin seeds.
- More ideas: Dried fruit, popped quinoa, chopped medjool dates, cacao nibs, flaky sea salt.
I hope you love these vegan chocolate bars as much as we do! If you give them a try, please leave a rating and comment below. I'd love to hear what you think.
