This quick and easy dairy free ganache recipe comes together with plant-based milk and melted dark chocolate. It's a decadent topping that's great for cake, cupcakes, crepes, donuts, fresh fruit, and more!

Traditional chocolate ganache combines heavy cream with bittersweet chocolate. My vegan version is just as rich and creamy as classic ganache, but made with dairy free ingredients. Make this for the chocolate lover in your life!

Why you'll love this recipe

  • Ready in minutes: This vegan chocolate ganache comes together before your eyes in 5 minutes.
  • Versatile: Use it as a wonderful topping, drizzle, frosting, or filling in a variety of different dairy free desserts.
  • Simple steps: I'm including 3 easy methods to make homemade dairy free chocolate ganache recipe.

Ingredients

This vegan ganache recipe comes together with a couple simple ingredients. Here's what you'll need to make this sweet treat, plus my recommended substitutions.

  • Dairy free chocolate chips: Use your favorite brand of vegan chocolate chips or type of chocolate. These are my go-to allergy friendly chocolate chips! Use their white chocolate for a white chocolate ganache.
  • Dairy free milk: Full fat coconut milk or coconut cream is the best milk alternative due to its thickness, creaminess, and richness. However, you can use oat milk, soy milk, or almond milk as an alternative.
  • Coconut oil: This ingredient is optional! Stirring in 1 tablespoon of refined coconut oil or vegan butter gives the ganache a shiny finish, rather than matte once dry.

How to make dairy free ganache

The full directions for this dairy free ganache recipe are in the printable recipe card below.

Option 1: Microwave

Add the ingredients to a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 20 second intervals, stirring in between, for a total of 60 seconds.

Option 2: Stovetop

Heat the ingredients together in a small saucepan over low-medium heat, whisking constantly to avoid scorching.

Option 3: Bowl

Alternatively, you can bring the dairy free milk to a boil then pour it over the chocolate in a metal bowl, stirring until smooth.

How to store leftovers

Store leftover ganache in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.

  • Remelt the ganache in a saucepan or in the microwave until you reach the right consistency.
  • To make vegan chocolate ganache frosting: Let it thicken and firm up in the fridge, whip it with a hand mixer or stand mixer, then use the frosting in a piping bag immediately.

What to serve with ganache

  • Pour over dairy free cake or dairy free cupcakes as a frosting.
  • Pipe into filled cupcakes for a sweet surprise.
  • Make chocolate covered candy. (Here's how to make coconut candy!)
  • Drizzle on vegan crepes or dairy free ice cream sundaes.

Let me know your favorite way to enjoy dairy free ganache!

Once i found the ingredients, this was an extremely easy recipe. The thought of making a ganache was daunting with how fancy it sounds. I ended up not shaking my can of coconut milk and just pulling the solids from the can, that was exactly half a cup of coconut milk. This ganache is very creamy and a good rich flavor! Thank you!

When I try to make chocolate ganache with something other than cream, the chocolate seizes. I have been advised that this is because any alternative has water in it. Thoughts? Thank you, Klara
