Growing up and living in California and Texas, I’ve had my fair share of great guacamole! I first started making homemade guac in college when I would host weekly Taco Tuesday dinners.

Why you'll love this recipe
- Ready in 5 minutes: Seriously! Just chop up the veggies, scoop out the avocado, squeeze some fresh lime, season, stir, and enjoy.
- Easy to adapt: You can make your guacamole as smooth and creamy or as chunky as you like. Want to add some heat? Stir in your favorite hot sauce. Not a fan of cilantro? Leave it out.
- Versatile: Of course, most of us think of chips and guacamole but you can also spoon guac onto tacos, spread on sandwiches, and more. The options are endless!
Ingredient notes
- Avocados: Make sure to use ripe avocados for guacamole! Do you know how to pick a good avocado at the grocery store? Start by narrowing it down to avocados that still have the stem attached. Then, gently press on one end. The avocado should be firm with a slight give.
- Tomatoes: Roma tomatoes are the best for guac! They have great taste and texture, plus they aren’t as watery as some other tomatoes. You could also slice grape tomatoes in half or into quarters for more of a bite.
- Onion: I always use red onion in guacamole but you could also use sweet yellow onion or even white onion for a different flavor profile.
- Garlic: Minced garlic is an optional ingredient but I personally love including a fresh garlic clove or two for extra flavor!
- Jalapeno: Sliced or diced jalapeño is another optional ingredient, but one that I’ve come to always toss in now. It adds just the right amount of spice without being overwhelming spicy.
- Lime juice: Fresh lime juice is best! Use a citrus squeezer like this to get every last drop.
- Cilantro: Some people like their guacamole with a lot of cilantro, I prefer to stir in just a bit for its fresh, citrusy, peppery taste.
- Salt: Just a pinch of flaky sea salt enhances all the ingredients!
How to make homemade guacamole
The full instructions for this quick and easy guacamole are found below in the recipe card.
Step 1: Dice the tomato and onion
Start by dicing the tomato and onion into uniform pieces. Once diced, add to a large mixing bowl.
Step 2: Add lime juice
Add freshly squeezed lime juice. The flavor is so much better when it's from fresh limes!
Step 3: Slice the avocados
Slice ripe avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop them into the mixing bowl.
Step 4: Season and serve
Season with salt and stir in an extra add-ins like jalapeño or fresh cilantro. Serve immediately and enjoy. Don't forget to wash it all down with a refreshing drink, like my Limeade Margaritas, pictured below!
Tips for the best guacamole
- Try to use large avocados for this recipe. If all you can find is small avocados, you might want to add one more.
- Use fresh lime juice, rather than lime juice from a bottle. You should get about 1-2 tablespoons of juice from a lime.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up 2-3 days.
- To prevent leftover guacamole from browning, squeeze a little lime juice or lemon juice on top before sealing the container.
