Now that it's officially grilling season, it's time to get outside and fire up your grill! One of my favorite parts about BBQ dinners are all the sides. This German Red Cabbage recipe pairs perfectly with grilled meats and veggies alike.
One of my favorite grilled meats is bratwursts. Instead of serving them alongside potatoes, try lightening the meal up with German red cabbage!
The best part is that you don't have to heat up your kitchen since you can use a dutch oven. If you don't have a dutch oven, a large skillet will work well too.

German Red Cabbage
Ingredients
- 1 medium onion sliced
- 1 medium apple sliced
- 1 medium head red cabbage shredded
- ⅓ cup sugar
- ⅓ cup white vinegar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
Instructions
- Heat olive oil over medium heat in a dutch oven. Add onion and apple and cook until onion is tender. This will take about 5-10 minutes.
- Stir in cabbage and remaining ingredients. Cook, covered until cabbage is tender, stirring occasionally. This will take about 1 hour.
