This simple smoked green beans recipe on the pellet grill is beginner-friendly and full of smoky flavor. Smoked green beans are tender yet snappy, and make for a great barbecue side dish.

My husband loves smoking meat, like Texas-style smoked brisket, on his wood pellet grill. Every great bbq meal needs plenty of side dishes, so that's where I come in!

These smoked green beans are easy to make and absolutely delicious. They're perfect for any cookout celebration, weekend grilling party, or holiday dinner like Easter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas.

My step-by-step guide with photos will show you just how simple this side is to make. You can use canned or fresh green beans, but I actually recommend opting for frozen green beans. Let's get cooking!

Ingredient notes

  • Green beans: I like using frozen green beans for this smoker recipe. If you prefer to use fresh, grab 1 pound of fresh green beans at the grocery store. Once home, wash and cut the ends off. Chop them in half into bite-sized pieces and blanch. To use green beans in a can, drain and rinse, and skip the blanching.
  • Oil: Use extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil! You could alternatively toss the green beans and seasoning in melted butter or with cooking oil spray.
  • Seasoning: This is where you can really spruce up your green beans! Keep it simple with a bbq seasoning blend or whisk up your own homemade creation.
  • Optional add-ins: For extra flavor, toss in sliced onion, chopped garlic, chopped bacon, and red pepper flakes.

How to smoke green beans

If the smoker is already going, toss these green beans on too! Simply transfer 16 ounces or 1 pound of frozen green beans to a disposable foil pan.

Drizzle about 1 tablespoon of oil over top and coat with about 2 tablespoons of seasoning. Toss to combine then smoke for about 2 hours, stirring halfway through.
