This non-alcoholic mint julep recipe combines zero proof whiskey with fresh mint leaves and simple syrup for a bright and refreshing mocktail. It's great for a Kentucky Derby party or a hot summer day.

A traditional mint julep is a mix of bourbon whiskey, mint, and simple syrup. To make a virgin mint julep recipe, simply use non-alcoholic whiskey or ginger ale.

Why you'll love this recipe

  • Tastes delicious: Who doesn't love a minty fresh drink? This one is easy to make in just minutes and a guaranteed crowd pleaser.
  • Great for parties: Mint juleps are the official drink of the Kentucky Derby and beloved by so many for a reason! They're cooling, perfectly sweet, and novel, with their own cups and mint sprig garnish.
  • Customizable: This non-alcoholic mint julep is light and easy to drink. It's also easy to make your own by adding ingredients like fresh fruit, topping with fizzy club soda or sparkling water, or by adjusting the sweetness.

Ingredient notes

  • Zero proof whiskey: Ritual Whiskey Alternative is my go-to for this recipe. It provides the same smoky and warm flavors as traditional whiskey, without the alcohol! As a substitute, use ginger ale, ginger beer, lemonade, or even limeade.
  • Mint: Fresh mint leaves are crucial for make a non alcoholic julep. Grab a fresh mint plant or pre packaged mint leaves in the produce department of your grocery store.
  • Simple syrup: Using simple syrup as a sweetener ensures a smooth drink with no sugar granules. The simple syrup ratio is 1:1, equal parts water to granulated sugar. Simply heat water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add sugar and stir to combine. Once dissolved, remove from heat and let cool before using.

Tips for making a mint julep mocktail

  • A classic mint julep is served in a silver cup or pewter cup, though you can use a rocks glass or similar.
  • Crushed ice is a must for mint juleps! It cools down the drink quickly and keeps the glass frosty.
  • Balance out the flavors by adding a splash of water, lemon juice, or lime juice for an equally delicious drink.
  • When muddling the mint, just press it until it becomes aromatic. You aren't trying to crush it, just slightly bruise it to help release its fragrant oils.

I hope you enjoy this NA mint julep as much as we do! If you give it a try, let me know what you think by leaving a rating and comment below. Cheers!
