Recreate the iconic In N Out Animal Style Fries at home! Enjoy French fries loaded with melted cheese, caramelized onions, and a zesty secret sauce.

My dairy free and egg free homemade hamburgers were such a hit! Since summer is right around the corner, I wanted to share one of my favorite burger side dishes with y'all, the infamous In N Out Fries!

These loaded fries are also perfect for an afternoon snack or game day appetizer.

What are Animal Fries?

In case you've never had the pleasure of indulging at In N Out, animal style is ordering your burger or fries with added pickles, extra spread, and grilled onions.

Animal Style Fries are technically part of their secret menu! But since they're so popular, In N Out has added them to their website menu.

In N Out Fries

Now you know what Animal Style Fries are: A basket of French fries topped with melted cheese, grilled onions, and their secret sauce.

Did you know you can also request different types of fries? Well they're technically the same french fries, but you can order them to your desired doneness.

  • Classic Fries: Just as they sound!
  • Light: If you want the fries to be softer than normal.
  • Light Well: If you want them a little crispier.
  • Well Done: A little more crispier and darker.
  • Extra Well Done: Basically burnt, wouldn't recommend.

Animal Style Fries Ingredients

One of the best thing about copycat recipes, is you have the ability to adapt the meal to make it fit your dietary preferences. Since I'm dairy free and egg free, here's how I make allergy friendly animal style fries!

French Fries: The fries at In N Out are typically long and golden, but I prefer crinkle cut so all the cheesy goodness and toppings can fill into the crevices.

Cheese: Grab some slices of good ol' American Cheese Slices! For vegan cheese, I recommend the brands Vevan, Violife, Daiya, or Follow Your Heart.

Grilled Onions: You can't serve In N Out fries without caramelized onions. They're surprisingly simple to make!

Secret Sauce: In N Out's burger sauce is similar to most fast food chains' special sauce. It's a blend of mayonnaise, ketchup, and relish. To make eggless, you can use plant based mayo or substitute with plain yogurt.

How to make Vegan Animal Style Fries

This Copycat Animal Style Fries recipe is actually quite quick and easy to throw together at home. It's also pretty simple to add your own spin to it!

Cook the fries

Start by cooking the French fries either in the oven or air fryer.

Caramelize the onions

Add butter (dairy free, if needed) to a skillet, then add chopped onions. Sauté for about 5-10 minutes, add a pinch of salt and pepper, and continue to sauté until the onions are browned and caramelized to perfection.

Melt the cheese

Once the fries are crispy, remove from the oven or air fryer and cover with cheese (dairy free, if needed), then place back in the oven or air fryer until the cheese is melted.

Assemble animal style fries

Transfer fries with melted cheese to a serving platter, then top with caramelized onions and a generous drizzle of fry sauce. Enjoy immediately!

How to Make Animal Style Sauce

To make the animal style fries sauce at home, you'll need just 4 ingredients!

Vegan Special Sauce Recipe

  • ¼ cup vegenaise (vegan, dairy free, egg free mayonnaise)
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • ½ tablespoon sweet pickle relish
  • ½ teaspoon white vinegar

Whisk everything together and store in an airtight jar until ready to use.

Recipe FAQ

How can I make healthy animal fries?

To attempt to make healthy animal style fries, you could make your own fries instead of using frozen. Or use sweet potato fries as an alternative.

Are animal style fries gluten free?

These loaded fries are gluten free as is, so long as your french fries and toppings are gluten free friendly. Animal fries are vegetarian as well!

What should I do with leftover caramelized onions and special sauce?

Use leftover toppings on my loaded burger bowls. It's basically a big mac salad! (The ultimate fast food mashup!?)

I hope y'all love this homemade animal fries recipe as much as we do! They're salty, savory, and the ultimate crowd pleasing snack.
