Texas Trash is a spicy chex mix recipe made with crunchy snacks tossed in a zesty buttery coating. It’s perfect for holiday entertaining or gifting for any occasion!

Can you believe Christmas is next week?! Do you have any plans? My husband and I will be hosting my side of the family at our house on Christmas Eve and visiting with his family on Christmas Day.

We'll be enjoying tamales, along with several snacks and appetizers. You better believe this easy chex mix will make an appearance.

What is Texas Trash?

Holiday Texas Trash is a salty, spicy, delicious combination of corn chex, wheat chex, cheerios, mini pretzels, peanuts, and more.

It’s tossed with melted butter that has been combined with hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.

Don't worry, if you're dairy free like me, just use plant based or vegan butter!

Original Texas Trash is cooked in the oven at a low temperature until it’s toasty and baked to perfection!

Christmas Texas Trash Recipe

The great thing about homemade chex mix is you can easily adjust and alter the recipe to fit your personal taste, heat preference, and food allergies!

For example, I’m using vegan butter because I’m dairy-free.

Here are the common ingredients found in most Texas Trash Chex Mix:

  • Butter: Plant-based, if needed
  • Hot sauce
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Celery salt
  • Paprika
  • Cheerios
  • Corn Chex
  • Wheat Chex: Substitute with Rice Chex if gluten-free
  • Pretzels: Mini-sized or rods
  • Peanuts

Chex Mix Variations

  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Popcorn
  • Bagel chips
  • Rye chips
  • Mini bread sticks
  • For a spicy and sweet chex mix, add in dried cranberries and raisins!

That depends how much hot sauce you use! Additionally, some hot sauce brands are spicy than others. I would say this recipe has a kick but it’s not super spicy.

Hi JoAnn, I typically use Tapatío or Tabasco sauce. I think Sriracha would be delicious!
