Biscuits and Chocolate Gravy History

No one quite knows the exact chocolate gravy origin but it's believed to have come from the Appalachians and the Ozarks thanks to influences from Spanish colonists.

Tips for Making the Best Chocolate Gravy From Scratch & FAQ

What is the best dairy free milk to use for vegan chocolate gravy?

You can use any plain unsweetened milk to make homemade chocolate gravy. I tend to use coconut milk, almond milk, or flax milk. Other popular plant based milks you could use are soy milk, oat milk, or rice milk.

Can I make chocolate gravy with water?

Absolutely! Everybody has their favorite chocolate gravy recipe that has been passed down through the years. Some recipes call for only water and no milk, others call for half and half, while this one uses only milk of choice.

How do I make gluten free chocolate gravy for biscuits?

Simply use gluten free 1:1 flour!

How do I store chocolate gravy?

Store leftover chocolate gravy covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop with an extra splash of dairy free milk.

Why is my gravy too runny?

If your gravy is too thin, simply continue to cook until excess liquid reduces to consistency of your liking.

Why is my gravy too thick?

Stream in additional liquid and stir until gravy becomes silky smooth.

Can I make chocolate gravy ahead of time?

Yes! Follow the recipe and let gravy cool before transferring to an airtight container and storing in the fridge. To reheat the entire batch, warm over low heat in a saucepan as your flaky biscuits bake.

What chocolate gravy variations are most popular?

Try mixing in peanut butter or another nut butter for a nutty salty finish.
Give it a kick by sprinkling in a pinch of cayenne pepper!
Add some orange or lemon zest for a subtle citrus flavor.
