Milk Alternatives for Baking
Luckily, there are several great milk substitutes when baking and cooking. Are some better than others?
In general, each type of milk will vary slightly in taste, consistency, and color. The key is to grab a carton that's plain in flavor and unsweetened!
Here are some popular non dairy milk choices:
- Soy milk: Smooth, very common, neutral in taste.
- Almond milk: Light, subtle nutty flavor.
- Oat milk: Super creamy and very popular!
- Coconut milk: Also popular, extremely creamy, subtle sweet coconut flavor.
- Flax milk: Great option for those who are dairy free, gluten free, soy free, and nut free! Thick and versatile.
As you can see there are several easy swaps you can make when substituting milk in baking.
These plant based mylk alternatives can all be substituted using a 1:1 ratio.
Butter Substitutes for Baked Goods
If you're dairy free or vegan, don't worry! We've got options. There are a handful of plant based buttery sticks at the store these days.
Another often overlooked option is coconut oil. Refined coconut oil has a neutral taste. So no coconut taste, smell, or aroma! Using melted coconut oil results in soft and fluffy cookies.
How to Replace Eggs in Cookies
Similar to how we have countless allergen friendly options for milk and butter, we have several egg replacer options as well!
In most cases, when baking cookies, a store-bought egg replacer or flax egg will work best.
- Flax egg: (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed + 3 tablespoons water)
- Store-bought: Bob's Red Mill Egg Replacer or JUST Egg are my go-to products!
Easy Egg Substitutes
Your egg substitute needs to equal the amount of egg you're wanting to replace. 1 egg is about ¼ cup (60g / 2oz), so for the below alternatives you'll need to use ¼ cup of the one your choose.
- Applesauce
- Mashed banana
- Yogurt (dairy free or regular)
- Silken tofu
- Pumpkin
