Making homemade oat milk is quick, easy, and deliciously dairy free! With just 3 simple ingredients, you'll have a creamy milk alternative in no time.

Homemade Oat Milk Recipe

Oat milk is naturally thick and creamy so it's perfect for cereal, oatmeal, poured into coffee, or used in baking recipes. (Like these baked oatmeal bars!)

Why you'll love this recipe

  • Quick and easy to make: This homemade oat milk recipe takes about 1 minute to make.
  • Affordable: Rather than buying store bought oat milk, make your own with just a few common pantry staples.
  • Allergy friendly: Oat milk is non dairy, vegan, nut free, soy free, and can easily be made gluten free.
How to Make Homemade Oat Milk

Equipment

My KitchenAid blender works like a charm and makes cleanup a breeze! If you don't have a blender, a food processor can be used instead.

Ingredients

  • Oats: Old fashioned rolled oats work best!
  • Water: I recommend using very cold water.
  • Sweetener: Maple syrup is my go-to sweetener.
  • Salt: Just a pinch of round everything out.

Flavor variations

  • Vanilla oat milk: Add 1 tablespoon vanilla extract.
  • Chocolate oat milk: Add 1 tablespoon cocoa powder or cacao powder.
  • Brown sugar oat milk: Use brown sugar as the sweetener!

How to make oat milk

Whether you're dairy-free or not, you may be interested in making your own homemade oat milk.

Simply blend together rolled oats, water, sweetener of choice, and salt for a quick and easy plant based milk.

Storage

I love blending my DIY oat milk together on a Sunday or Monday and using it throughout the week. I store mine in a pitcher or large mason jar to lock in freshness!

Oat milk should last 5-7 days, when stored well-sealed in the refrigerator.

It's normal for homemade dairy free milk to separate. Just give it a stir before drinking!

Tips for making homemade oat milk

Here are a few things to keep in mind when making oatmilk:

  • For gluten free oat milk, use certified gluten-free oats.
  • Be sure not to over-blend, as that can lead to slimy oat milk!
  • Change up the sweetness and flavor depending on your personal preferences.

Recipe FAQ

Does oat milk froth?

Unfortunately, homemade oat milk does not froth well because it does not contain a lot of protein or fat to form air bubbles.

Can you freeze oat milk?

Yes, you can freeze oat milk for up to 3 months. The defrosted oat milk should be used within 3 days of thawing. Even though you can freeze oat milk, I recommend against it since the grains separate during the freezing process.

Can you microwave oat milk?

If needed, you can warm oat milk in the microwave in short increments. If you heat it too quickly, it can become very thick.

Does oat milk go bad?

Yes, store oat milk in a sealed container in the fridge for up to a week. You'll notice it's gone bad when it has a funky smell and unpleasant taste.

This doesn't look too hard. I have made almond milk and cashew milk. I bet this one is good too. And it probably tastes good as well.
