Learn how to make crispy roasted sweet potatoes in the oven or air fryer. Perfect for a healthy side dish, a salad topping, or a simple snack.
Sweet potatoes are by far one of my favorite ingredients to roast! At one point in time, I was roasting them twice a week. I love how flavorful and versatile they are.
Why you'll love this recipe
- Sweet potatoes are a great source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
- They're crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
- Spice how you like with flavors you enjoy!
Ingredients
- Sweet potatoes: Any red or orange variety will work!
- Spices: Salt and ground black pepper are a must. My favorite seasoning blend is a mix of chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, and ground cumin.
- Oil: I prefer using olive oil, avocado oil, vegetable oil, or refined coconut oil.
How to pick a good sweet potato
While picking out sweet potatoes at the grocery store or farmers market, check the skins. Choose a firm sweet potato with smooth skin. Pass on any discolored, bruised potatoes with wet or soft spots.
How to cook sweet potatoes
For delicious crispy taters, cook sweet potatoes in the oven or the air fryer!
- To start, clean each potato and pat dry.
- Cut off the ends, then slice into ½-inch thick rounds.
- Chop rounds into cubes by dicing ½-inch equal sized pieces.
- Transfer to a mixing bowl and toss with oil and seasoning.
Oven baked sweet potatoes
Preheat oven to 425F and spread sweet potatoes on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper or foil. Bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping once halfway through.
Air fryer sweet potatoes
Cook sweet potatoes in air fryer at 400F for 10-12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.
Sweet potato seasoning ideas
Don't be afraid to play around with spices! Find what you like, you really can't go wrong. Just sprinkle on your favorites. Here are some variations to get you started:
- Spicy roasted sweet potatoes: Add crushed red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.
- Candied roasted sweet potatoes: Season with brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Savory roasted sweet potatoes: Season with rosemary and black pepper.
Serving suggestions
- Serve with roasted vegetables as a side dish.
- Top on salads or grain bowls.
- Toss in breakfast scrambles.
- Roll in tortillas for tacos or burritos.
Tips for crispy sweet potatoes
- Cut sweet potato cubes, rounds, or wedges evenly.
- Don't overcrowd the sheet pan or air fryer basket.
- Cook sweet potatoes in batches if needed.
- Flip or shake halfway to ensure even cooking.
How to store leftovers
Sweet potatoes are great to make ahead and meal prep! Here's what to know about storing leftovers, freezing them for months ahead, and reheating.
- Store roasted sweet potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- To freeze, let the cooked sweet potatoes come to room temperature, then place in an airtight storage container or freezer safe bag. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Let thaw in the fridge before reheating.
- To reheat, bake sweet potatoes in the oven at 400F for about 10-15 minutes, or until warm.
Frequently asked questions
A pound of raw sweet potatoes is about 2 large sweet potatoes or 4 small sweet potatoes.
You do not have to peel sweet potatoes before roasting, as the skins are safe to eat. Sweet potato skin actually contains fiber, nutrients, and antioxidants! I prefer keeping the skin on for extra crispy sweet potatoes, but it's personal preference.
I recommend roasting Jewel or Garnet sweet potatoes, as they're both tender and sweet when cooked.
